A one month-old boy was brought to the hospital because he “stopped peeing”. Nothing else seemed to be wrong…he was eating normally and didn’t seem sick. As I examined him, I noticed a small dribble of fluid coming from his belly button. Ahha!
Something, likely congenital, is blocking his normal flow of urine. Because the urine was building-up and creating increased pressure, his body found a pop-off valve. An old fetal remnant called a urachus opened up and is allowing the child to stay alive while we find a pediatric urologist.
