Today we left Spain at the break of dawn and arrived early in Milan, Italy. Lisa and I immediately jumped on train, transferred a few times and eventually arrived in a residential area to have lunch with our friend Cristina’s parents, Betty and Chris. They have a beautiful flat and served us a refreshing salad with melon and prosciutto.
During the meal we had interesting conversation. First, I learned about Italy’s involvement in World War II, particularly the mixing of the local mafia and the Allies. Second, my eyes were opened to the wonderful world of lace. Betty showed us many of her creations. One in particular, a baptismal cap, was extraordinary. After some nosy questioning, I discovered she worked 1,200 hours to finish the infant sized cap!
After lunch, we boarded another train and headed to the coastal resort town of Monterosso, in Cinque Terre. We just arrived and are settling in.
