The replacements

As things are winding down in Liberia, I have started to help find my replacement. This afternoon I interviewed three doctors for the position of Medical Director. The first applicant was living in Kenya and working on a HIV project. His English was not fantastic, but he had great experience. The second applicant was living in Rwanda. His English was horrible and he did not know anything about the job or organization. He was immediately eliminated.

Then I spoke with the one! He was an older emergency room doctor from the US with significant experience in conflict/post-conflict settings. I was actually a little nervous at the beginning. He is my senior by 25 years and I was asking the tough, probing questions. Overall, the conversation went smoothly and I think he is interested in joining the team.
