A reality check

This morning, as I was walking around my new hometown of Saclapea, I saw a strange object approaching in the distance. In the middle of the red, dusty, dirt road, a motorcycle was lumbering forward with something strange sticking out on both sides.

When it was approximately twenty meters away, I began to understand the scene. The motorcycle driver had two passengers; one was a mother and the other was her dead school-age child draped across her lap. The corpse was hanging with its feet and hands nearly touching the ground.

I was quickly jolted back to reality and memories from DR Congo came flooding back.
