Today is my first day in Liberia. This week I will stay in the capital, Monrovia and have many meetings with organizations responding to the influx of refugees from the Ivory Coast. I will then drive to the eastern county of Nimba and begin my field work.
I will give you a little background on the country.
Liberia was not colonized by Europeans, but was developed as a nation of freed American slaves in the early 19th century. The nation was then devastated by war during the 1990’s. As a result, the illiteracy, unemployment and child mortality rates are very high. Also, according to Transparency International’s 2010 report, this is the most corrupt nation in the world.
Wow, I can’t imagine anything worse than the DR Congo! Hopefully I will be able to have a small impact in my short time here.
