One phone call worth the work

At 8PM last evening, the nurse called with a “quick question”.

She said, “We have a new case of spina bifida and the child has fevers. The surgeon placed the child on only one antibiotic. I am worried that the child may have meningitis due to gram negative bacteria. May I give the patient cefotaxime?”

The nurse evaluated the patient, thought about the treatment plan, decided that the doctor’s orders were inadequate and then did something about it.

I happily told her it was a fantastic plan and thanked her for the great work.

This one phone call made five months of labor seem worthwhile.
