Making the cut

Yesterday we were rounding on Dieu Merci, a 10 year-old patient with advanced HIV who has been in a coma for 3 months. He has showed no improvement yet he continues to fight for his life.

As we were leaving his bedside, I thanked the nurses for taking immaculate care of his skin and jokingly said to the medical student Papy, “he sure could use a haircut. Why don’t you do a little grooming?”

When I walked in the ICU today the patient looked fantastic. He was cleaned and had a shiny, newly shaved head. When I asked what happened, Papy said “I used a straight razor and gave him a little treatment so he would look better.”

I was floored by his dedication to the patient.
