Since I was a medical student, I always liked receiving patient transfers from other hospitals. The cases are usually challenging and the patients are frequently critically ill.
This week, two patients were sent from outside facilities. One was sent from the largest hospital in the Eastern Congo and another from a rural clinic. Each place had exhausted their diagnostic and treatment options and asked for our help.
Both children are in a coma, one has AIDS and they have both been treated with many antibiotics. Hopefully we can make some progress.
