Locked-in a battle

David presented one week ago. He is a previously healthy 4 year-old boy who became ill with fever and headaches. By the time he arrived in our emergency department, he was in a coma. We were unsure whether he had cerebral malaria or bacterial meningitis, so we treated him for both.

Initially, he did not respond to severe pain. Now, he opens his eyes and recognizes people but is still unable to move the muscles of his face or body. He is in a “locked-in” state.

He seems very scared, so each day I sit by his side and talk with him or play music on my iPhone. Although his prognosis is poor, I hope he continues to battle and make improvements.
