Just making a living

Jobs are hard to come by in the Himalayas. Invariably, if you want to make money you must work hard under suboptimal conditions.

Many men work on the trails and their main job is to chip rocks. They spend entire days hammering away at solid stone.

Others take on the back-breaking task of portering. For many consecutive days, they haul heavy loads up and down the mountain. For example, if a lodge in Gokyo needs wood for structural repairs, humans must carry all supplies for 7-10 days from the town of Jiri. No trucks or planes, just all human labor.
