My friend and former co-chief, Tricia, asked for a special wedding present. She wanted me to sponsor a child’s medical care in the developing world. Now, nearly two years later, I found her gift.
Sumit is a two year-old with congenital heart disease (VSD, sub-aortic stenosis and coarctation with a PDA). His family has been unable to afford any type of medical care and the patient has withered away in local hospitals.
I met Sumit last week at Siddhi Memorial and knew immediately he would die without corrective surgery. I then spoke with the pediatric cardiac surgeon in Kathmandu and was told that if the patient had money for medication, blood products and food, he was eligible for a government funded heart surgery.
After the donation of Tricia’s wedding present, he now has the necessary funds to proceed and he is currently waiting for surgery at the Nepal heart center. The mother and aunt have not stopped smiling for days.
Thanks Tricia!
