Anganwadis

Our last day in western India we visited two Anganwadis. These are government sponsored childcare providers for those under 6 year of age. There are approximately one million centers providing care to 58 million poor children.

The first location we visited was the house of one of the teachers. All of the children sat on the floor, sang songs, repeated the alphabet (in English too), played and laughed. The kids were well cared for. I have two videos from this site below.

The second location was a dingy shack with no electricity for the majority of the visit. The children were just sitting in the dark with no games and little interaction with the adults. All of them were sick with colds and most of them were malnourished.

Both locations received the same amount of funding yet were strikingly different.
