The simple life

Life for us in Baucau is fairly simple. We wake-up in the morning and fix ourselves cereal or scrambled eggs. We walk the 50 or so yards to work and round on the patients. For lunch, we return home and make a vegetable stir-fry or a peanut butter and jelly sandwich. The afternoons are usually slow. We finish any pending patient work and then head off to internet.

Our apartment is a one bedroom place. We have a gas stove and refrigerator but no oven. The toilet is flushed by dumping water in the bowl and we clean ourselves daily with soap and a bucket of cold water.

We purchase food at street markets. Locals sit on the side of the road and sell a variety of vegetables including tomatoes, potatoes, green beans, eggplant and greens. There are also places to buy canned goods (peas, corn or tuna) and soft drinks. We still have not found a place to purchase non-canned meat.
