Another first day

Today was my first day working at Baucau Hospital. There are multiple, large one-story buildings on either side of a concrete path that meanders down a slightly graded hill. From the hospital windows, you can view the distant tiny white-capped waves crashing on the shore. The setting is serene and I had a calm feeling as the day began.

I worked with Dr. Maria, a middle-aged Cuban pediatrician covering the neonatology unit. We rounded on the well children delivered yesterday and then proceeded to the neonatology intensive care unit. She told me a brief story of each patient and then we discussed necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC, this disease Little Doctor developed in the Congo) and jaundice.

After rounds, Dr. Maria told me about the medications, equipment and laboratory analysis available. Astoundingly, I learned they have fewer resources in this hospital than HEAL Africa in the DR Congo.
