Two in a row

Yes, another good day. I was called for a code in the neonatal unit. I sprinted across the dirt courtyard and down the dimly lit hospital hallway. As I opened the door, the nurse was standing over a sick newborn infant. He was blue and breathing hard, using all of the muscles in his neck, chest and abdomen. His oxygen level was 50% and his heart rate was 220 beats per minute.

The nurse and I gave him oxygen, a generous amount of IV fluid and, within minutes, he was started on antibiotics. Things happened quickly and smoothly. The saturations rose immediately to 100% and within hours, his heart rate normalized.

Prior to leaving the hospital for the day, I stopped by the unit. He had the appearance of a healthy baby and began breatfeeding successfully.

Tonight I will sleep well.
